The Dzogchen Practice of Separating Samsara from Nirvana: Khordé Rushen taught by Lama Michael Gregory
Based on The Principles of the Dzogchen Practice of Khordé Rushen by Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche
This 12 Week Course with Lama Michael will explore the transformative and significant practice of Khordé Rushen.
The ultimate essence of Atiyoga practice is abiding in primordial awareness. In the beginning, for the authentic state of contemplation to arise, it is indispensable to "separate" or distinguish mind from the state of pure instant presence, the nature of mind.
Numerous upadeshas have this aim, but one that stands out as particularly simple to apply is Khordé Rushen, the separation of samsara and nirvana. It is generally presented in three forms: outer, inner, and secret.
In Outer Rushen, the practice is to spontaneously enact anything whatsoever with the body, the voice, and the mind, without any choice or restraint as what to do and what not to do. At the end, exhausted from all the activities, you simply relax in the natural state that is your primordial condition.
Over the course Lama Michael will offer clear and vivid teachings with modern every day examples as a way of intergrating these meditation instructions into life. An interactive Q&A sessions will be offered at the end of every session.

Benefits of Practice:
This practice of rushen eliminates the present results that are the actual phenomena of saṃsāra, brought about by past actions. It also puts a stop to attachment, aversion and ignorance, which are the seeds or causes of future saṃsāric experience. By terminating both, it brings us directly to the great wisdom of awareness that is nirvāṇa.
Since this is a marvellous method for precisely identifying the nature of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa and liberating the ordinary body, speech and mind within the nature of the three vajras, or within the expanse of essence, nature and compassion, it is called Khordé Rushen—separating the domains of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa.
There are outer and inner rushen practices. The former is based on the vision of the Unimpeded Sound, and the Dzogchen tantras in general, while the latter is based on the vision of the Longsal Barma Tantra. Although a method for purifying the six classes using the six syllables is taught in the Dzogpa Rangjung, it is mainly a practice for the dead. Still, I do not think it contradictory for those who are alive and well to practise it.
Since rushen integrates all our ordinary saṃsāric actions into the path, just as they are, without changing or adapting them in the slightest way, it is a unique feature of Dzogchen, which accords with the wondrous vision of the root tantra, Unimpeded Sound (Dra Thalgyur) and other texts.
