Shedra: Tongthun Senge Ngaro

or, Lion's Roar That Explains 'Tathagatagarbha'

August 21, 2020 - August 23, 2020

Offered via ZOOM

Teacher:  Phillip Hedrick

In the 19th century the great Nyingma master Mipham Rinpoche composed the Nyingma shedra. Shedra is the commentary and study of the Uttaratantantra or Gyu Lama as taught by the regent of Buddha Shakyamuni, the Buddha of the future, Maitreya. These were transmitted in the pure land of Tushita to the great pandita Asanga.

Asanga then wrote down these extraordinarily profound teachings for the benefit of all sentient beings, to be preserved for all time.

Over time there have been many different ways of understanding the subject of these teachings, the nature of the Buddha, Buddha Nature. It is essential that to study and practice the Sutra Mahayana and the Vajrayana we need a clear and precise clarification of how we should understand these teachings. Mipham Rinpoche’s commentaries are undisputedly the clearest and most celebrated analysis of these teachings, which are identified as the Third Turning of The Wheel of Dharma. Truly, understanding Buddha - nature is essential to our practice. It’s existence is the very reason why we practice and why the teachings exist. We are offering these teachings as a close examination of Buddha Nature in order to develop realization and eventually achieve enlightenment.

Senge Ngaro, is translated as “ lions roar.” This expression refers to the essential teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni. However this “ lions roar” is not a superficial or causal explanation of the nature; instead, it uses logic, reasoning, and valid cognition, tshad ma, to establish the truth. Once established in this way, such a point cannot be refuted since it has been logically proven. It therefore becomes like a lion’s roar of truth that cannot be scared off by statements or arguments of others.

May you be blessed by the recognition of innate Buddha nature.

In loving presence
