“The truth that transcends the intellect will not be seen by means of the intellect. The point of non-action will not be reached by means of deliberate action. If you want to achieve the point of non-action transcending thought, sever the root of mind itself and rest in naked awareness!”

 —Tilopa

Mahamudra practice is considered to be the pinnacle of the Buddha’s teachings. The Buddha taught that all appearances, both suffering and freedom, manifest as inseparable from our minds, thus, when we directly encounter the wisdom of Mahamudra this will allow us to bring an end to our own suffering and to compassionately benefit others.

The Mahamudra Tradition which explores the nature of mind - thoughts, emotions, identity and consciousness itself. These instructions are the exact method used to gain liberation from suffering or enlightenment for the last several thousand years in the Buddhist tradition.

Michael’s approach is to offer the heart of these teachings in a clear, direct and transformative way that awakens the natural radiance, joy and creativity of our minds. He presents the Mahamudra teachings as a means of seeing things in, as he says, “a positive and open light,” and to transform even the most difficult of situations into the path to our awakening.

Specific and crystal clear pointing out instructions and meditations will be offered. Each instruction building experientially upon the other in clarity and understanding.

The retreat will begin with two days of calm-abiding (shamatha) meditation, then two days of mixing calm-abiding meditation with traditional Vipassana (special insight meditation) before focusing solely on the ancient Nature of Mind (Mahamudra) instruction.

Gen-la Chokyi Dhakpa (Michael Gregory) first received Mahamudra transmission from HE Bokar Rinpoche in Bodh Gaya in the 1990’s, then from HE Gyaltsab Rinpoche at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, HE Thrangu Rinpoche, HE Tai Situ Rinpoche, and finally from HH Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje in Mirik who at that time requested that he teach and share in the traditional three year retreat. This Mahamudra retreat is the Sangha’s 21st annual and commemorates the beginning of our second Three Year Retreat cycle.
