Zoom Only Retreat
Buddhism is full of stories. Tantric Buddhism is full of fantastical stories - skies filled with glowing orbs, maidens dancing in the sky, people walking through solid mountains and leaving handprints on solid rock.
Interesting. But we are Western people who think of such stories as fairy tales. These are stories we tell our children as bedtime stories, or find in a movie or a novel. Our own lives are rational. Technical. Dollars and cents. Bottom line. We put our faith in reason. We believe the evidence of our senses.
So what are we to make of the stories? Another label for the stories we’re told in our studies of Buddhism is myth. The world described by the stories is labeled mythic. The pattern of values and attitudes held in the stories can be labeled mythos.Sometimes a distinction is made between mythos and logos, which is the pattern of values and attitudes held in the linear, rational world.
As practitioners we are trained to look at our minds. So we can look, and ask if the values and attitudes we find there belong to the world of logos or mythos.
The workshop being offered in the Living Wisdom series is designed to explore this terrain. We’ll look for some landmarks of the mythic world. We’ll unearth some of these elements which may be present in our minds, but unrecognized. We’ll retell some familiar stories to highlight the patterns. We’ll practice telling some part of our own story from within the mythic pattern.
It will be a fun day of exploring and opening to this non-linear, non-rational, non-scientific world view. All done with the intention of softening the relationship in our minds between logos and mythos. With the intention of entering the world of our practice whole-heartedly and playfully.
