SUMMARY:Calm-Abiding: Cultivating Tranquility and Working with the Primary Hindrances to Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Calm-Abiding: Cultivating Tranquility and Working with the Primary Hindrances to Meditation Retreat\nwith\nLama Michael Gregory\nFebruary 24 - 26\, 2023 \nOffered via Zoom \n \nMental Quiescence (Shamatha): A Description of the Upcoming Retreat and the Meditations Offered \nHow to Understand the Meditation Experiences of Calm-Abiding\, Mahamudra and Dzogchen \nThe Five experiences (Tib. ཉམས་ལྔ་\, nyam nga;) – these experiences accompany the development of shamatha (calm-abiding) meditation: \n\nAt the beginning thoughts will arrive one on top of another\, uninterrupted\, like a steep mountain waterfall. This is the experience of movement (གཡོ་བའི་ཉམས་\, yo ba'i nyams).\nGradually\, as you perfect meditation\, thoughts become like the water in a deep\, narrow gorge. This is the experience of attainment (ཐོབ་པའི་ཉམས་\, thob pa'i nyams).\nThen it becomes like a great river slowly winding its way down to the sea. This is the experience of familiarity (གོམས་པའི་ཉམས་\, goms pa'i nyams).\nThe mind then becomes like a still and placid ocean\, ruffled by only the occasional ripple or wave. This is the experience of stability (བརྟན་པའི་ཉམས་\, brtan pa'i nyams).\nThe fifth experience is that of consummation (མཐར་ཕྱིན་པའི་ཉམས་\, mthar phyin pa'i nyams) which is described as an oil lamp that is not blown by the wind\, resting bright and clear\, unmoved by anything.\n\nThree further experiences \nThree experiences (Tib. ཉམས་གསུམ་\, nyam sum) — three types of 'positive' meditation experiences mentioned in the Dzogchen and Mahamudra traditions. They are: \n\nBliss (Tib. བདེ་བའི་ཉམས་\, Wyl. bde ba'i nyams)\,\nClarity(Tib. གསལ་བའི་ཉམས་\, Wyl. gsal ba'i nyams)\, and\nAbsence of thoughts (Tib. མི་རྟོག་པའི་ཉམས་\, Wyl. mi rtog pa'i nyams).\n\nAs you continue to practice [meditation]\, you may have all kinds of experiences (Tib. nyam)\, both good and bad. Just as a room with many doors and windows allows the air to enter from many directions\, in the same way\, when your mind becomes open\, it is natural that all kinds of experiences can come into it. You might experience states of bliss\, clarity or absence of thoughts (non-conceptuality). \nIn one way these are very good experiences\, and signs of progress in meditation. \n\nFor when you experience bliss\, it’s a sign that desire has temporarily dissolved.\nWhen you experience real clarity\, it’s a sign that aggression has temporarily ceased.\nWhen you experience a state of absence of thought\, it’s a sign that your ignorance has temporarily died.\n\nBy themselves they are good experiences\, but if you get attached to them they become obstacles. Experiences are not realization in themselves; but if we remain free of attachment to them\, they become what they really are\, that is\, materials for realization. \nFurthermore\, it is said that being attached to these kinds of experience causes the practitioner to be further reborn in samsara—in places devoid of any opportunity to practise the Dharma\, respectively: \n\nAttachment to the experience of bliss can lead to a rebirth in one of the six heavens of the desire realm\, or in the preta realm;\nAttachment to the experience of clarity can lead to a rebirth in the heavens of the form realm\, and\nAttachment to the experience of absence of thought can lead to a rebirth in the heavens of the formless realm\, or in the animal realm.\n\n\nZoom and Retreat Recordings: \nThe retreat will be offered in our live\, interactive online zoom classroom. \nRecordings of teaching sessions will be posted within 24 hours after the end of the last session and will be available to all those who register for the retreat. \nWhen: \nThis retreat takes place on zoom from Friday 24 - 26. \nSchedule:\nStarts Friday February 24th at 4 pm PT\nEnds Sunday February 26th around noon PT \nWhere: \nThis retreat will also be offered online through our Virtual Classroom Zoom. SUMMARY:"Bardo Retreat: The Intermediate States of Waking\, Dreaming\, Dying and Conscious Rebirth with Lama Michael Gregory: ZOOM\, Jan 28-Jan 30 2022"
DESCRIPTION:Bardo Retreat: The Intermediate States of Waking\, Dreaming\, Dying and Conscious Rebirth\nwith\nLama Michael Gregory\nJanuary 28 to January 30\, 2022 \nOffered via Zoom Only \n \n \nWhen we practice well for death\, then this can be the most significant opportunity for awakening. Lama Michael Gregory will guide us toward recognizing our luminous nature. \nThrough specific teachings and meditations that prepare us for recognizing the states of waking\, dreaming and dying and conscious rebirth we will discover how to meditate on the illusory nature of the bardo\, just as Naropa shared in his spiritual song: \n“The mind during dreams should be mixed with the bardo mind. \nIt has the nature of the complete enjoyment body. With both the pure and impure illusory form bodies\, their display is recognized during the bardo.” \nThe important point is mixing the dream bardo with consciousness transference. \nBefore death the yogi should think as follows: If all things are truly existent then death would be impossible. The disintegration of death\, we know that things are not truly established. Therefore\, death itself\, though it appears truly existent\, is actually not truly existent. So\, offer all your possessions without remainder to the Three Jewels. \nRelatives\, friends and loved ones cause one's mind to wander from samadhi. Therefore\, before death\, abandon them. If possible\, adopt the seven-point meditation posture. If not\, use the lion posture\, lying on the right side. Focus your mind on your Lama and the Three Jewels\, generate strong heartfelt faith and take refuge. Determine that during death you will recognize suchness\, the clear light ultimate truth\, and that for the benefit of all beings you will arise in the bardo mahamudra union (the enjoyment body). \nIn order to benefit all the six types of mothers\, at death\, by the three\, appearance\, increase and near attainment finally dissolving\, think: ‘My mother clear light will meet the son.The non-conceptual truth body will see its own face.’ \n"Yogis\, are you trained in the bardo?” \n"You\, with your mind far away\, thinking that death will not come\, entranced by the pointless activities of this life\, If you were to return empty-handed now\, would not your life's purpose have been utterly confused? Recognize what it is that you truly need! It is a sacred teaching for liberation! So\, should you not practice this divine sacred teaching\, beginning from this very moment?" \n-- Padmasambhava\, The Tibetan Book of the Dead \nThis retreat will be offered on our zoom online classroom. Daily teaching will be offered by Lama Michael\, as well as a guided meditation session and question and answer sessions. \n  \nEnrollment: \nThis retreat is open to all. \nSchedule: \nStarts Friday January 28th at 4 pm PT (PACIFIC TIME) \nEnds Sunday January 30th around noon PT (PACIFIC TIME) \n  \nTuition: \nSuggested donation is $200 for all participants. \nThe suggested donation allows Mindfulness Meditation Centers to support the costs of running the retreat\, the sharing and distribution of the teachings\, and the support of our community. \n  \nMindfulness Meditation Centers is a non-profit center and community devoted to making meditation\, mindfulness\, and the teachings of awakening available to all.
