Therefore there are two lineages for the Yangti Nakpo: \nThe long lineage transmission (ring gyu) from Dungtso Repa 'the later' and the short lineage (nyegyü) through Trulshik Dongak Lingpa. \nAccording to Tulku Sang-ngag Rinpoche\, \n‘Within the Nyingma system of Dzogchen there are the Mind category (Semdé)\, the Space category (Longdé)\, and Category of Pith Instructions (Mengakdé) classes of teachings. Within the Category of Pith Instructions\, there are the Ati\, Chiti\, and Yangti levels of teaching. As the name suggests\, the Yangti Nagpo teachings belong to the Yangti or quintessence class.’ \nThat which is called Yangti refers to the very essence of the enlightened mind of Samantabhadra\, Vajrasattva\, and Vajradhara. \nIt is the culmination of the Heart Essence of the Lotus Born\, the Dakini’s Whispered Lineage\, the swift path to buddhahood. \nHow marvelous! What fortune to obtain this through the kindness of the guru. It is said to lead to liberation if seen\, heard\, or thought of. If supremely praised as such by the vajra words of truth found in the tantras of true words\, no need to mention if one meditates on its actual meaning. \nWithout looking for buddhahood elsewhere\, the Yangti path can show it directly to you right now. This amazing Dharma! In this existence\, when this incomparable\, peerless wish-fulfilling jewel has been obtained\, don’t search for trinkets. \nAlthough sometimes mistakenly considered to be solely focused on dark retreat\, Yangti Nakpo is in fact an extensive cycle of spiritual trainings spanning the breadth of Tibetan Vajrayana practice. In Tulku Sang-ngag’s Yangti Gomde center\, students are trained in these many practices within the categories of Ngöndro\, kyerim\, dzogrim\, and Dzogchen. In both the old and new revelations of the Yangti Nakpo cycle\, dark retreat is the main emphasis and the primary unique feature of these teachings setting them apart from of Dzogchen cycles. However\, entering into dark retreat does not not happen right away\, if at all. \n  \nThe Yangtik Ngakpo include many texts and practices\, and among them are the following: \n* A Dzogchen guru sadhana\, Kusum Tuktik\, revealed by Chinkar Donyo Dorje \n* A three roots practice of the Hundred peaceful and wrathful deities \n* The Lama and Dakini practices \n* A dark retreat set of instructions \n* Supplemented practical instructions \nRevelation and Propagation of the Terma \n  \nGuru Rinpoche and Yeshé Tsogyal \nThe Yangti Nakpo was brought to Tibet by Guru Rinpoche and hidden as a terma by Yeshé Tsogyal. \nDungtso Repa 'the later' \nIn the 15th century\, it was discovered by Dungtso Repa 'the later' at Lake Mandal Nakpo in the Gampo Region of central Tibet\, who revealed a Dzogchen guru sadhana and a dark retreat instructions. \n  \nChinkar Donyo Dorje \nIn the 19th century\, Chinkar Donyo Dorje\, a contemporary and close Dharma friend of Shabkar Tsokdruk Rangdrol\, made further Yangti Nakpo revelations including the guru sadhana\, Kusum Tuktik. At that time however\, he stated the conditions were not right for these additions to the cycle to be disseminated\, and that in his subsequent incarnation he would re-reveal and transmit these teachings. \n  \nTrulshik Dongag Lingpa \nIn the 19th century\, the next incarnation of Chinkar Donyo Dorje was Trulshik Dongak Lingpa\, who made the prophesied re-revelations of the Yangti Nagpo. \n  \nAbout Lama Christopher Wilkinson \nChristopher Wilkinson started his career in the Dharma at the age of 15\, taking refuge vows from his root teacher Dezhung Rinpoche. In the years that followed Dezhung Rinpoche introduced him to Geshe Ngawang Nornang\, Lama Kalu Rinpoche\, Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche\, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche\, and many others. Chris identified with the Rime Non-Sectarian movement from the start. Pursuing a formal education in Tibetan and Sanskrit Languages\, he graduated in 1980 with a BA in Asian Languages and Literature and another BA in Comparative Religion from the University of Washington. After two years of travel around the holy places of Asia\, including time in India and Nepal\, he worked for five years in refugee resettlement in Seattle\, Washington. Wishing to get back into Buddhist Studies\, he went to the University of Calgary\, where he completed his MA in 1988. In 1990 Chris went to Sulawesi Indonesia\, where he served as a professor of English language for three years\, exploring the ancient Sri Vijaya empire. Back in America\, he worked as a Research Associate for the Shelly and Donald Rubin Foundation\, playing a small part in the early development of the Rubin Museum. He then taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary for five years. He also became a Research Fellow with the Centre de Recherches sur les Civilisations de l'Asie Orientale\, Collège de France for twelve years. Meanwhile\, the teachings are grounded in the deep understanding of the fundamental principles and practices of Tantra\, leading to a deeper sense of freedom and ones true inner nature.\n\n\n\nThis retreat will also offer a rare glimpse into the Dalai Lama’s secret temple and yogic practices of Tsalung Trulkhor. Before engaging in the actual practices of the Six Dharmas\, one begins by doing the "six exercises of Naropa\,” known as Trülkhor Yoga - foundational introduction to these practices will be offered during the retreat.\n \nThe Saturday evening talk will travel from The Library and fundraiser for building the Dalai Lama’s Secret Temple in Southern California. This talk will continue in The Great Room of the Caribou Club a few blocks away.\n \nSources of this collection of tantric practices are amongst others the Guhyasamaja Tantra\, the Hevajra Tantra and the Chakrasamvara Tantra\, which go back all the way to Buddha Shakyamuni. The Indian Mahasiddha Naropa\, a student of Tilopa\, put the practices into a systematically documented form and passed the Six Yogas on to his student Marpa\, who then passed them on to his own student\, the renowned Tibetan yogi Milarepa.\n \nThe Six Yogas work with the subtle body\, particularly through the generation of the Tummo-Inner Fire\, and form the basis of the inner yoga practices of Mahamudra.\n  \n\nThe Six Yogas of Naropa are: \n\n- Tummo: The Yoga of Inner Fire\n- Gyulü: The Yoga of the Illusory Body\n- Ösel: The Yoga of Clear Light\n- Milam: The Yoga of the Dream State\n- Bardo: The Yoga of the Intermediate State\n- Phowa: The Yoga of the Transference of Consciousness at the time of death\n\n\nWe will also be exploring karma - mudra\, sometimes unfortunately thought of as sexual yoga\, as a path to awakening.\n \nThe teachings of Tilopa (988-1069 CE) are the earliest known work on the six dharmas. Tilopa is said to have received the teachings directly from Chakrasamvhara. Nāropa learned the techniques from Tilopa. Nāropa's student Marpa taught the Tibetan Milarepa\, renowned for his yogic skills. Milarepa in turn taught Gampopa. He was recognised by National Geographic Society as one of seven 'Explorers for the Millennium' for his fieldwork in Tibet's Tsangpo Gorge and Beyul Pemakö\, the ‘Hidden-Land Arrayed like a Lotus’. He holds advanced degrees in Literature\, Anthropology\, and History\, and undertook prolonged meditation retreats in Himalayan caves under the guidance of some of the greatest luminaries of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The beds of the ponds are made of pure sand of gold. On their four sides there are stairs made of gold\, crystal\, beryl\, and silver. Above there are towered pavilions\, also adorned with gold\, lapis lazuli\, crystal\, tridacna\, red pearl\, and agate. In the pond are lotus as large as chariot wheels\, as green colors have a green luster\, and the white colors a white luster. They are exquisite\, wondrous\, fragrant\, and pure. In this brief teaching\, the Buddha taught the yogi Bahiya to put aside all views of self arising from confused and deluded thoughts based on clinging and craving. \nTo truly understand any problem\, the problem must be observed clearly\, without discriminating thought and without a view of self attached to what is observed. This includes the immediate and mundane problems of the ever-changing physical world\, and the individual and immediate problem of the distraction of stress and unhappiness. \nIn Dharma practice\, as dispassionate mindfulness develops\, the distraction of the physical world and the distraction of our own individual stress and unhappiness is understood as the same distraction. The ego-personalities’ need for the people and events of the phenomenal world to be different than they appear to be is the distraction of stress. It is the distraction of stress that leads to mindlessness and maintains stress and unhappiness\, and the confusion of the ego-personality. \nThrough knowledge developed through whole-hearted engagement with the Dhamma the distraction of the world is overcome\, stress and unhappiness are abandoned\, and lasting peace and happiness prevails. \nThe yogic adept Bahiya was right to understand the immediacy of needing to awaken through Dharma. No one can know when sickness\, aging and death will arise and this is why the Buddha gave these final instructions moments before he himself passed: \n“Impermanence and dissolution are relentless. Strive diligently for your own salvation.” \n~The Bahiya Sutra \nBAHIYA SUTTA \nUDANA 1.12 \nBahiya was revered in his community as a person of great understanding. One day in seclusion Bahiya entertained the idea of whether he was an Arahant\, an enlightened being\, or was he lacking in some key understanding. \nIn meditation\, a female deva told him that he was not yet an Arahant. In fact\, his current practice did not have the qualities that could give rise to enlightenment. (the deva is metaphor for Bahiya’s own heightened awareness) He asked the deva (insight arose within him) if there was one in the world who knew the way to enlightenment. \nThe deva told Bahiya of the Arahant\, a rightly self-awakened one who teaches his Dhamma. The Buddha was in Savatthi at the time. Bahiya immediately left to find the Buddha and learn the Dhamma. \nHe came upon a group of monks and asked if they knew where to find the Buddha. The monks told Bahiya that the Buddha was on his alms round. Bahiya went into town and came upon the Buddha. Bahiya feared impermanence and uncertainty and was concerned that he or the Buddha may die before he\, Bahiya\, received the Dhamma. \nThe Buddha was serene\, at peace. Bahiya placed himself at the Buddha’s feet and asked: “Teach me the Dhamma Awakened one. Teach me the Dhamma for my long-term welfare and lasting happiness.” \nThe Buddha replied\, “This is not the time\, Bahiya\, I am on my alms round.” \nBahiya pleaded “Awakened one\, no one can know for sure the dangers there may be for you or for me. Teach me the Dhamma for my long-term welfare and lasting happiness.” \nA second time the Buddha responded\, “This is not the time\, Bahiya\, I am on my alms round.” Again Bahiya pleaded “Awakened one\, no one can know for sure the dangers there may be for you or for me. Teach me the Dhamma for my long-term welfare and lasting happiness.” Finally\, the Buddha relented: “I will teach you the Dhamma\, Bahiya. Listen carefully to my words. Train your self in this manner: In what is seen\, there is only the seen. In what is heard\, there is only the heard. In what is sensed\, there is only the sensed. In what is cognized\, only the cognized. \nThis is how you should train yourself. When for you there is in what is seen only the seen\, in what is heard only the heard\, in what is sensed only the sensed and in what is cognized only the cognized\, then Bahiya there is no you in connection with what is seen\, heard\, sensed or cognized\, there is no you there. When there is no you there\, you are neither here nor there nor anywhere in-between. This and only this is the end of stress and unhappiness.” \nUpon hearing the words of the Buddha Bahiya’s mind cleared. Clinging and grasping\, greed and aversion ended\, and all self-referential views were extinguished. Bahiya awakened gaining full human maturity. \nShortly after Bahiya’s encounter with the Buddha and his enlightenment\, he was attacked and killed by a cow. The Buddha\, upon hearing of Bahiya’s death instructed some monks to retrieve the body\, to cremate it properly and to prepare a memorial to Bahiya. \nWhen completed the monks\, knowing Bahiya’s awakening\, asked the Buddha what Bahiya’s future state would be. The Buddha replied: “Monks\, Bāhiya was wise. He practiced the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma and did not pester me with issues not related to the Dhamma. Bāhiya\, monks\, is totally unbound.” “Where water\, earth\, fire\, & wind have no footing there the stars don’t shine\, the sun isn’t visible. There the moon doesn’t appear. There darkness is not found. That Sutra is the Prajnaparamita\, called the second turning of the wheel of dharma. To transform the ignorance of ordinary mind to the mind of perfect wisdom\, it’s essential to penetrate the deepest meaning of this teaching. The condensed form of this series of sutras is called the Heart Sutra. \nThe Buddha taught 100\,000 verses of Sutra to expound on the (Buddha’s) understanding of the wisdom of his mind. In these verses he clearly described his perfect view of reality\, “the way things are”. The most famous teaching arises from his perfection in the “Heart Sutra”\, describing the pure essence of this perfect vision of reality in just 100 verses. \nPlease join us as we take an unusual and deep dive in to one of the most mysterious and rarely presented teachings on the nature of reality. The Tantric practitioner chooses to confront bewildering and chaotic forces of confusion\, fear\, aggression\, desire\, and pride and work with these forces in such a way that they are channeled into creative expression\, loving relationships and wisely engaged forms of life. \nBy illuminating the richly symbolic language of tantra through the intermediate language of psychology\, students will be made aware of the compelling link between a Western tradition that harkens back to the transformative traditions of our own past and the comparably ancient strategies of Buddhist tantric practices. \nKeeping with the pragmatic and therapeutic aims of both psychotherapy and Buddhist meditation\, practitioners will be asked to integrate the importance of applying these ideas to the concrete realities of day- to- day life. \nThis experiential retreat led by MMC’s Director\, Michael Gregory\, offers contemporary practitioners with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the nature and practice methods of tantric meditation. \nParticipants are requested to bring an image of a yidam currently used in their practice or to bring an image of a Buddha that is meaningful to them. \nRetreat Course Prerequisites:\n\nThis retreat is restricted to students with a serious meditation practice\, with prior retreat experience and background in Emptiness\, Mahamudra or Dzogchen practices.\nAttendees have completed the online PMAI Archetype test and have an understanding of the Archetypes represented. It applies to pleasant and unpleasant phenomena alike. \nAlthough all things in this world are burning\, the Buddha taught that you have a choice to not add fuel to the fire\, to not make the burning personal\, and to not be identified with the burning. In each moment you have a choice to either add fuel in the form of wanting\, aversion\, and ignorance – or not. \nFor your reflection: Observe as objectively as you can the phenomenon of your mind registering something. Are you able to notice that there is a degree of stress or friction just in making the effort? Also observe how often you add the “fuel” of wanting\, aversion\, and ignorance to your life experiences. Be particularly interested in how even in neutral and pleasant circumstances\, you still add this fuel. Vehicle is the method and enlightenment is the result. This method brings the four purities: the enlightenment is the fruition of this purification. These are: complete purity of body\, complete purity of place\, complete purity of enjoyment\, and complete purity of actions. These refer to complete purity of holy body\, holy field\, the holy enjoyment\, and the holy actions \nThe retreat will include an introduction to the way to meditate that achieves the state of pure enlightenment. \nWe purify the place or field by visualizing it as the Mandala or pure realm\, of the deity. \nWe purify our body by visualizing ourselves in the aspect of the holy body of the deity. \nWe purify the enjoyments\, such as material possession\, transforming them into the form of pure offerings. \nWe purify our actions by meditating on them as the aspect of the holy actions of Lord Buddha. \nThis path to enlightenment is practiced through meditations called Creation and Completion. \nWhen the teachings speak of\,  “the great illusory nature of samsara and nirvana”—one is introduced to the fact that\nBuddhas and Bodhisattvas are beings who have mastered illusory appearances. \nPhenomena display themselves like phantom apparitions\, empty yet appearing. Understanding the manner in which the enlightened ones manifest helps to understand the illusory nature of all things within the worldly realms of samsara and nirvana. \nThe essence of mind is pointed out by these teachings as naked awareness\, which actually refers to the unimpeded open transparency of the wisdom mind. While naked awareness is the nature of our minds\, just having this nature is not enough; we need to actualize it for ourselves\, within our own experience. It is for that purpose that we engage in the practice of Yidam Yoga. \nPlease join us for this fascinating overview of the enlightened path of creation and completion.
