Mindfulness Meditation, Phillip Hedrick

Mahamudra is the culmination of all of the meditative practices of the Buddhist tradition. It is the practice of realization of the absolute nature of all phenomena including what we call our mind. These deepest of meditations bring the final insight of not self and not other. The retreat will be presented in a series of ten meditations with explanation and instruction. It will begin with a brief introduction to the preliminary practices, and an introduction to Mahamudra as a practice of the greatest insight:

  1. Looking at stillness – recognizing that mind has no inherent reality, yet appears as everything.
  2. Looking at characteristics of stillness – finding a state of lucidity and clarity.
  3. Pointing out the nature of stillness – recognizing that reality is nothing more than momentary arisings.
  4. Recognizing all thoughts as Mirage – looking at the mind of ‘occurrence’ or movement of mind.
  5. Bring the poisons to the path – directly seeing the nature of mental afflictions.
  6. Recognizing that Mind is the Creator and Destroyer of all experiences.
  7. Recognizing that Mind and all senses are intertwined – examining the two kinds of appearances, external, and internal [what is experienced by your mind]
  8. Recognizing that not seeing the nature of mind is the basis of all delusion.
  9. Recognizing the inseparability of body and consciousness – demonstrating the emptiness of both.
  10. Recognizing stillness and thoughts as the same or different -seeing if stillness or thoughts are the same or difference in essence.

May you experience Mahamudra the true cessation of all suffering.
